Diego-Suarez, now known as Antsiranana, is a French-style city in the north of Madagascar. The area north of Diego-Suarez is dominated by the Tsaratanana Massif, the highest mountain in the country. Nearby are the Ankara caves and an interesting Nature Reserve. The city is located on a magnificent bay with islets just off its shores, beautiful beaches and parks filled with plant and animal life.

The area has most of the very few north-facing (read: sunniest) beaches in South Africa, but be warned: as it's very popular with local families, it is a writhing, seething mass of juvenile humanity every December. Dolphins—sometimes hundreds at a time—frequently move through the bay in search of food, and whales swim past during their annual migration (July–October)
